Obituary for James R. Gibbons

James R. Gibbons, 90, of Honey Grove passed away at 5:45 p.m., Thursday, June 18, 2020, at the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.
Born on December 25, 1929 in Tuscarora Twp., Juniata County, he was a son of the late David and Martha (Snyder) Gibbons. On June 1, 1962, he married his late wife, Helen L. (Whitman) Gibbons with whom he shared more than 51 years of marriage before her passing on December 21, 2013.
He is survived by a brother in law, Lee A. Whitman and his wife Mildred of Port Royal; and several generations of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Sollenberger and Arleen Junk; and one brother, Thomas Gibbons.
Mr. Gibbons was a 1947 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown and he was employed and retired as a mechanic with over 43 years of service from Norman Clark and Son, Honey Grove.
During the Korean War, he proudly served his country with the U.S. Army.
He was a lifetime member of the NRA, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and served as a long time pit steward at the Port Royal Speedway. His love of racing stemmed from a career in the Penn Central Racing Association and, at one time, he was the track champion at Port Royal Speedway.
James enjoyed traveling all over the country following dirt track racing along with the NASCAR circuit.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and he always looked forward to traveling to Canada on his fishing expeditions.
As per Mr. Gibbons’ request, services and interment will be private with Pastor Gary Krabill officiating.
