Gene A. Horton, 89, of Spring Arbor Assisted Living, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina and formerly of Mifflintown passed away at 2:34 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2020.
Born on May 15, 1930 in Broad Top, Bedford County, he was the son of the late Cloyd A. and Edna Marie (Leighty) Horton. On July 3, 1952 he married his late wife Betty M. (Koontz) Horton with whom he was blessed to share more than 66 years of marriage until she preceded him in death on December 16, 2018.
Surviving are: two daughters, Cathy A. Halbleib and her husband Byron, of Lenoir, NC, Cindy M. Gross and her husband Daniel, of Southern Shores, NC; a brother, Gary N. Horton and his wife Joanne, of Evansville, IN; five grandchildren, Dr. Adrienne Darhower, Cody Halbleib, Chelsea Beiser, Lauren Gross, Ethan Gross, one great-granddaughter Micah Jacobson and several generations of nieces and nephews.
A brother, Miles R. Horton preceded him in death.
His memberships included the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Past Worshipful Master of the Union Lodge No. 324, F. &A.M. , both of Mifflintown, Harrisburg Consistory A.A.S.R., Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Juniata Valley Forest No. 88, and the International Telephone Pioneers of America.
He was past president of the Lions Club and School Board Member of South Middleton School District, both in Boiling Springs.
Mr. Horton was a proud Korean War veteran having served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
In 1992, he retired with 40 years of service from Sprint Telephone as a Superintendent.
Gene loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing, tying flies, and was a proficient stained glass artist; however, spending time with his family meant everything to him.
All services are private with the Pastor Denise Haskins officiating. Interment will be in the Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Mr. Horton’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
