John E. “Mountain Man” Bishop, 80, of Mifflintown (Arch Rock), passed away at 11:08 A.M. on Monday, February 4, 2019, at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown.

He married his surviving wife, Mary Ann (Frantz) Bishop, with whom he was blessed to share over 55 years of marriage.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Dennis C. Bishop and his wife Michelle, of Honey Grove, the light of his life his only granddaughter, Makenzie S.A. Bishop, a daughter-in-law, Leslie M. Bishop, of East Waterford, a sister, Donna L. Heffner, of Thompsontown, 2 nieces, Kathy Schlegel, Lori Fisher, both of Thompsontown, a great-niece, Tiffany Hutchings and a great-nephew, Joshua Ranck.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John E. Bishop, Jr. on February 17, 2017.

In 1956 he graduated from Juniata Joint High School, after which he proudly served his country with the U.S. Army.

At one time he attended the Arch Rock United Methodist Church and currently he was attending the East Waterford Presbyterian Church. His memberships included the Wildlife Turkey Federation and a life membership to the NRA.

After many years of service John retired as a safety supervisor from the Raytheon Nuclear Energy Co.

With his love of the outdoors, “The Mountain Man” was always at home in nature. He knew the Shade Mountain like the back of his hand. He was an expert guide, hunter, and fisherman. In 1979, he had the pinnacle of his hunting career by getting the triple trophy; harvesting a white tail deer, black bear, and a wild turkey. For many years, he, along with his wife, hunted out west, especially Wyoming where he served as a hunting guide and his wife served as the camp cook.

A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the East Waterford Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. John Park officiating. Interment will be private at the East Waterford Cemetery.
