Obituary for Donald H. Thome

Dr. Donald H. Thome, 84, of Mifflin, passed away at 4:42 A.M. on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Donald was born February 18, 1934, son of the late Dr. Roscoe J. and Mabel Heisey Thome.
He married his surviving wife, Karen J. (Kivlin) Thome, on August 18, 1984. Donald is also survived by 5 children: daughter, Sandra Thome Schneider and her husband Bob of Fennville, MI; son Jeffrey Thome and his wife Barbara of Hesperia, MI; son Douglas Thome and his partner Lisa Kaupp of Buford, GA; son Edward Thome of Mifflin; step-son Patrick Cherry of Philadelphia; and a sister Barbara Thome Bagri of Mount Joy. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Donald graduated from Mount Joy High School in 1952, attended Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, and received his medical degree as Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in 1959. He went on to a distinguished 43-year career, first as a general practitioner, then as an Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat specialist. From 1975-1990, Dr. Thome was Chairman of the Ophthalmology Department and Assistant Dean at PCOM. In 1990, he and his wife moved to their hunting cabin on Shade Mountain in Juniata County where Dr. Thome had Ophthalmology practices at Mountain View Medical Center and Henry Optical, both in Mifflintown.

Donald was an active member of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, Mifflintown, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, canoeing & kayaking, and playing chess and bridge with close friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 12, 2019, beginning at 11:00 AM at St. Jude's Thaddeus Catholic Church, 3918 William Penn Hwy., Mifflintown with Father William Weary and Father Jayaselan Amalanathan officiating. Interment will follow at the McCoysville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass at the church.
