Obituary for Katherine C. "Kit" Stong

Katherine C. “Kit” Stong, 92, of Academia passed away at 11:32 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at her home.
Born on February 19, 1925, in Tuscarora Twp., Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey K. and E. Maude (Arnold) Milliken. On November 11, 1941 she married her late husband Rex O. Stong with whom she was blessed to share more than 66 years of marriage until he preceded her in death on June 21, 2008.
Surviving are her daughters, Pat Henry and her husband Max, of Mifflin, Donna Evelyn, of East Waterford; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Niman and her husband Scott, of Mifflintown; a sister-in-law Esther Hockenberry, of Brookline Village, Mifflintown; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandsons; as well as many generations of nieces and nephews.
A son, H. Deryl Stong, a daughter, Dixie S. Hunter, a grandson, Kevin E. Stong and two sons-in-law, James Hunter and William Evelyn preceded her in death. She is also the last of her generation having been preceded in death by 12 siblings.
Mrs. Stong was a member of the McCoysville Presbyterian Church, where she served as the goodwill ambassador, sending out birthday, anniversary, sympathy and get-well cards. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion post #298, Mifflintown; the Mifflintown Senior Citizens Center, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Juniata County Chapter, as well as serving as Democratic Committee woman for Beale Twp. and as den mother for the Cub Scout Pack of Walnut.
In earlier life she was employed by Bea and George Cossack at their restaurant in Mifflintown. She later became a Head Cook for the Juniata County School District retiring in 1986 after 25 years of service. Also she will be long remembered for working in the concession stands at the Port Royal Speedway.
Kit loved to travel, crochet, crafts, crossword puzzles and word jumbles. Other hobbies included flower and vegetable gardens and she cherished the time that she spent at “Pappy’s World” along the Tuscarora Creek; however, family and friends were most precious to her.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with Rev. Graham Fowler officiating. Interment will follow in the McCulluch’s Mills Cemetery, Honey Grove.
A viewing will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the funeral home.
